Prescription Refill Policy

We request that you have your pharmacy FAX a refill request to our office, and that you call them at least one or two days in advance if you need a prescription refilled. The pharmacist will request your refill with the correct dosage, frequency and number of pills needed. When you call our office, all of this must be looked up and this is time consuming ? extending the period of time before you can reasonably get a refill.NOTE: Usual office hours are Monday through Thursday. We generally do not see patients on Friday so if you know you are "running low" and need a refill, please call by Thursday in order to have it refilled before the weekend. Otherwise, we will handle requests again on Monday morning.

SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING PAIN MEDICINES:Pain medication CANNOT be requested on the weekends (from Friday to Sunday.) Dr. McCain takes call in rotation with a group of physicians, none of whom have access to your chart and all of whom have agreed not to refill narcotic pain prescriptions on weekend call. Please plan your pain medication accordingly, and ask for timely refills on Mondays through Thursdays.

NARCOTIC REFILLS or 3-MONTH REFILLS
Please note that narcotic and 3 month refills are NOT available same day. They MUST be called in well before need. If a narcotic or multiple month prescription MUST be picked up same day, we will charge $25 (not payable by your insurance company) for this RUSH prescription request.
Additionally, The Texas State Board of Medical Examiners requires that if you need a chronic pain management medication you must sign a contract that reflects Dr. McCain?s status as the only provider of your pain medication. You will find a copy of that contract under the tab TSBME CONTRACT on the homepage of this website. Patients needing narcotic refills must be seen and re-evaluated every 3 months without exception.

IF IT HAS BEEN TOO LONG SINCE YOU HAVE BEEN SEEN
For your safety, if too much time has elapsed since your last visit, it may be necessary to schedule an Office Visit to be re-examined before a refill can be authorized. Please stay informed as to how often Dr. McCain must see you for your condition, in order to keep all prescriptions current. If the staff calls you for an appointment before a refill, Dr. McCain has determined this to be medically necessary.Thank you for your understanding!

Office Infusion Center

Victoria Arnold, RN, Nurse Manager.

Tory has over 25 years of experience in nursing care including Head Nurse of Emergency Medical Centers, Intensive Care Units and as House Supervisor. She has superior skills in direct patient care and management and is considered by our patients to be an integral part of their recovery. She opened our infusion center in 1999.

Our center has gained extensive experience in treating a variety of rheumatologic disorders, and is currently one of the largest clinics in Texas treating rheumatic diseases. We have a significant number of patients in active treatment with diagnoses of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, including renal and nervous system involvement, and Immune Deficiencies.

Generally, medically stable patients do not need admittance to the hospital for certain therapies and laboratory work-up. The Office Infusion Center (OIC) is conveniently located at the physician's office to provide ambulatory therapeutic services for the patients. This involves administration of ordered medication(s) into a vein through a IV catheter.

Meet Kathy Nguyen, FNP

Kathy comes to us from Salt lake City, Utah where she practiced at South Valley Dermatology Center for 4 years. She has been a Nurse Practitioner for 5 years and loves her new home in Texas.

Kathy joined the Texas Rheumatology Center in October, 2006 and has proved her natural skills and expertise in medicine. She specializes in rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis and performs skin biopsy for diagnosis of autoimmune disease. She also is a subinvestigator in arthritis studies at the Texas Research Center.

Use of mid-level practioners in this medical practice allows more timely access for new patient appointments.

As a nurse practioner, Kathy performs histories and physical examinations and diagnosis, recommends treatment, and prescribes appropriate medications.

All relevant historical, examination, and laboratory and x-rays findings are reviewed with Dr. McCain, in a timely manner and appropriate therapy is chosen.
